I used to draw images on my sneakers and would add patterns to my outwear as a teenager. Years later, I am still modifying my apparels after purchasing them.
The year 2020 arrived hitting us all hard. There was little choice but to stay home and try to distract oneself from devastating news of friends and family catching COVID around the world. I started organizing & recycling my wardrobe and linen closet. I noticed the elegant lace around the old bed linen lying next to my favorite scarf and a delicate old cotton blouse. An exquisite gathering , I thought.
The combination of circumstances and passion led me to grab the tiny appliqué scissors, a long piece of white sewing thread, and the needle from the drawer. Soon I had started the garment assembly, and voilà! Achievement. Satisfaction.
The process of learning and venturing farther into the craft had begun. Modern technology allows just about anyone to acquire knowledge and the skills they desire and so I did. Naturally, I had to ruin a few fabrics at first. But I persevered. I even reused those same fabrics time and again during this process of learning.
Soon I found myself in my own atelier, swamped with pattern making tools, fabrics, leather pieces, sewing materials and several manuals. I still ruin fabrics, but far less than before.
The more I learn, the more I realize that I need to learn more. The endless ocean of fashion beckons with frustration and love. Much love.
